Who We Are
The Village Optometrist is an independent practice in the Gateway Centre, run by Larissa Schulenburg, B.Optom. Being independent means every recommendation is based on your eyes and your life, not on a head office target.
We chose Hermanus because it’s home, and because a small town deserves the same standard of care as anywhere else. Patients tend to stay with us for years, not because we ask them to, but because an appointment here means being listened to, examined properly, and given a straight answer.
Our philosophy
We believe good eye care starts with time, not turnover. Every examination includes a proper conversation about your eyes, your history and what you actually notice day to day, not just a quick check and a prescription. We explain what we find in plain language, and we’d rather spend an extra few minutes answering a question than rush you out the door. Independence matters to us because it means our advice is shaped by what’s right for you, not by targets set somewhere else.
Meet the team
The practice is run by Larissa Schulenburg, B.Optom (UFS). Larissa believes an eye examination should never feel rushed. She enjoys getting to know how each patient lives, works and uses their eyes before making recommendations. Whether you're struggling with headaches, progressive lenses or simply want reassurance that your eyes are healthy, her goal is that you leave understanding your vision—not just your prescription.
Larissa examines every patient herself, which means continuity of care and someone who gets to know your eyes over time, rather than seeing a different person at each visit. She keeps up to date with new diagnostic technology and treatment options so that the advice you receive is current, practical and specific to you.
Community
Hermanus is a small town, and we like it that way. We support local schools and sports clubs, and we’re happy to see familiar faces in the waiting room. Being part of this community means being accountable to it too, so we take feedback seriously and aim to be a practice that Hermanus residents genuinely recommend to friends and family.
